  Making Sense of SCIENCE

Professional Learning Courses for K–12 teachers, coaches, leaders, and administrators

Making Sense of SCIENCE (MSS) offers a variety of courses for diverse audiences. Each course has multiple components that ensure plenty of opportunities for personalized learning. All courses include multidimensional investigations into core science and engineering ideas. In addition courses have a several other investigations, including investigations into cases of classroom practice, literacy content and practices essential for science, and the pedagogical philosophies that underpin next generation teaching and learning in science and engineering.
Teacher Courses are face-to-face and vary in length from 1 day to 5 days. MSS staff and consultants are available to facilitate these courses. Alternately, MSS staff can provide a Facilitation Academy that prepare leaders in your region to facilitate the Teacher Courses themselves.

SCIENCE INVESTIGATIONS
Science Investigations are hands-on activities that support collaborative learning. Teachers participate in guided inquiries and experiments designed to help adult learners explore core science concepts and classic misconceptions. Science investigations are designed to strengthen teachers content knowledge, inquiry skills, and ability to identify and correct common misconceptions.

TEACHING INVESTIGATIONS
Teaching Investigations are a chance to explore the art of teaching. Teachers read and reflect on a teaching case that describes a classic classroom dilemma, and examine what is revealed by the instructional moves and student thinking contained within the case. Teaching investigations are designed to help teachers explore the impact of instructional choices on student understanding, consider the implications for their own teaching practice, and explore alternative strategies.

LITERACY INVESTIGATIONS
Literacy Investigations are explorations of literacy learning in science. Teachers reflect on reading, writing and talking in science-specific ways and explore the strategies and tools needed to effectively navigate complex science content. Literacy Investigations are designed to promote teachers abilities to read, write, and talk in science-specific ways and understand how to support students' science literacy needs.
