Michigan Facilitation Academy RegistrationThis June the Michigan Math & Science Centers Network will be hosting a series of MSS Facilitation Academies for teachers and teacher leaders. These Facilitation Academies are designed to prepare staff developers, district science leaders, and other teacher educators to effectively lead Making Sense of SCIENCE courses for teachers. Two learning tracks are available. Complete the form below to register.
June 18–22, 2018 Ann Arbor, Michigan |
Track 1
Days 1–3
Intro to Energy for Teachers & Teacher Leaders of Grades 6–8 | Explore the very abstract topic of energy in different contexts, from wind-up toys to rockets and food webs. Compare various definitions of energy and identify systems where energy is conserved and systems where it is not. Build your skills around writing in science and supporting students in doing the same. Analyze common student ideas related to energy. Science, Literacy, and Teaching Investigations Days 4–5 Next Generation Science Implementation (NGSI): Waves for Teachers & Teacher Leaders of Grades 6–8 Investigate the properties of waves and explore the changes they cause in systems. Use, develop, evaluate, and refine models of waves while being metacognitive about the practice of modeling and strategies for improving modeling skills. Explore the storage, transmission, and playback of digitized sound. This course includes Science, Modeling, and Teaching Investigations. MSS Waves Student Unit materials are available for middle school. |
Track 2
Days 1–2
Next Generation Science Implementation (NGSI): Waves for Teachers & Teacher Leaders of Grades 6–8 Investigate the properties of waves and explore the changes they cause in systems. Day 3 Supporting Science Instruction for Science Leaders Knowledgeable administrators and leaders are critical to establishing and sustaining a productive culture of science learning. This means knowing what high-quality next generation science instruction looks and feels like, as well as understanding how best to support teachers. This course provides participants with an authentic, adult-level science learning experience followed by investigations into key NGSS resources, collective problem solving and individual goal setting. The course is designed for teacher leaders, instructional coaches as well as site and district administrators. Days 4–5 Next Generation Science Implementation (NGSI): Systems for Teachers & Teacher Leaders of Grades 6–8 Practice describing and modeling systems, and consider the tradeoffs of a variety of representations of systems. Explore how systems respond to disturbances and investigate what influences a system’s level of stability, including the effects of positive and negative feedback. This course includes Science, Literacy, and Teaching Investigations. MSS Systems Student Unit materials are available for grades K, 1, 2, 3,4, 5, and 6. |
